With it’s easy and intuitive interface the TCP Optimizer program can aid both novice and the advanced user in tuning TCP and IP related parameters in the Windows Registry.

Using the program couldn’t be easier.

• Select the maximum speed from the “connection speed” slider bar
• Choose your Network Adapter, or check to “Modify All Network Adapters”
• Choose the “Optimal settings” radio-button near the bottom of the program
• Click “Apply changes”, after hitting the “Apply changes” button the program will give a preview of all changes before editing the Windows Registry
• Click “OK” to actually edit the Registry, and reboot when prompted by the program

Firefox, when tweaked in this manner, will render faster than Opera.

Type about:config on the Firefox address bar and hit Enter.

This will display an alphabetical listing of preferences by name, as well as a search bar at the top.

Type network.http.pipe on the Filter search bar.

A narrowed down list will appear showing preferences network.http.pipelining and network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and their current values.

Double-click on the network.http.pipelining string to change its value to true if not already. [see notes 1 & 2]

Double-click on the network.http.pipelining.maxrequests string and change the current value in the Enter interger value box to 34 and click ok. [see note 3]

To enable the turbo feature in Firefox you will need to manually create a preference.

Right-click anywhere on the page and select New and then Boolean.

Enter browser.turbo.enabled as the preference name in the New boolean value box and click ok, and then set the value in the Enter Boolean value box to true.

That’s it, now simply close and restart Firefox, and you should see an immediate 10% to 40% increase in web page transfer speed, and faster opening of your tabbed windows !

note 1:
The Boolean preference network.http.pipelining enables an experimental acceleration technique called pipelining, which speeds up the loading of most Web pages. A browser normally waits for some acknowledgment of a given request from a server before attempting to send another one to that server; pipelining sends multiple requests at once without waiting for responses one at a time.

note 2:
If you use a proxy, set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true as well.

note 3:
The integer preference network.http.pipelining.maxrequests controls the maximum number of requests that can be pipelined at once. There’s not much evidence that going above 34 will help.

By default (even with QoS disabled) Windows XP reserves up to 20 percent of your connections bandwidth.

To override this reserve take the following steps.

Make sure you Log on as Administrator, not as a user with Administrator privileges.

* Start > Run > type gpedit.msc
* You will see [Local Computer Policy]
* Expand the [Administrative Templates] branch
* Expand the [Network] branch
* Highlight [QoS Packet Scheduler]
* Double-click [Limit Reservable Bandwidth]
* Check [Enabled]
* Change [Bandwidth limit %] to 0 %
* Click [Apply] [OK]
* Restart

Effect is immediate.
