If your car dealer is telling you that the repairs needed on your vehicle are outside of the warranty period, there may be something you can do about it.

Check the National HighwayTransportation Safety Administration’s site, to find out if the manufacturer has issued a technical service bulletin for the failing component. Car manufacturers will usually repair know defects which are outside of warranty.

ALLDATA is another good place to look for existing TSB’s. However, a limited amount of TSB data is availible for free. The more detailed reports require a paid subscription.

If you’ve been told, that your’e going to have to foot the bill for your cars repairs, it’s best to keep your cool, then do your homework, and when you go back, you’ll have an easier time with getting them to cooperate in handling your claim with the manufacturer.

In 1997, I saved myself a bundle of money when I was able to have a complete engine replaced on my import because I was savvy enough to do my research. As it turned out, because of the amount of labor required to repair the original motor, the dealer was able to justify with the manufacturer, total replacement.
